County-Operated Senior Centers Offer Virtual and In-Person Programs in April
SOMERVILLE, NJ – Register for programs at any of the six Somerset County-operated senior centers and join the fun Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services oversees the senior centers that provide a wide range of programs to help foster lifelong enrichment in a social and uplifting atmosphere.
Closing: There will be no in person or virtual classes/programs on Good Friday (April 7).
Lunch
Attendees can invite a friend or neighbor to join them for lunch. All county-operated senior centers provide a nutritionally balanced lunch on Monday through Friday for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 years and above. The menu includes a choice of hot meat-based or meatless entrées or cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunches. Senior center clients must make reservations for lunch by 10 a.m. on the previous business day.
Virtual and Hybrid Programs
Programs will be occurring in person, and as hybrid and virtual. Participants can attend hybrid programs in person with an instructor and via Zoom. Hybrid and virtual programs are noted throughout the schedule.
Zoom Tutorials

Take this fitness program, which is based on the cutting-edge science of neuroplasticity, which means the class can help the brain and central nervous system change both functionally and structurally. Nia MELT with Alida Westfield – Mondays, 11 a.m. Have an hour of fun every week while practicing this combination of healthy exercises Nia and MELT. Nia combines martial arts, modern dance, and yoga in a workout accompanied by music. Participants practice 15-20 minutes of non-impact Nia movements performed to music while standing or sitting and then practice MELT, which is a self-treatment technique to help prevent pain, heal injury, and erase the negative effects of aging and active living. The class was created especially for seniors to help promote HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training).

April 12, 11 a.m. – “What’s Cooking” by the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts. Learn about nineteenth-century cooking techniques through a demonstration of cooking utensils and food-related artifacts from the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts teaching collection. Participants are encouraged to reminisce about favorite recipes, and to share food and cooking memories.
April 13 & 27, 11 a.m. – Basic Computer and iPad Instruction with Parul. Learn basic computer and iPad skills, such as checking email, opening documents and attachments, clearing the cache and creating word documents. April 14 & 28, 11 a.m. – Brain Games and Hand Bells with Adrienne Graubard. Solve puzzles and challenge your brain with mind-stretching activities, such as word games and a fun-filled musical workout using hand bells.
April 17 & 24, 11 a.m. – “Healthy Aging” by Senior Education Director Brenda Miller, Community in Crisis. Learn valuable information about health and wellness, medication usage, stress management, depression, and substance use and misuse in this seven-week interactive wellness program for adults 60 years of age and older. In the seventh session, participants will find out about alternative ways to manage pain such as yoga, chiropractic care, massage and more. Attendance at all (or most) sessions is required.
April 19, 11 a.m. – “Diabetes Care” by Shivani Shah, Walmart Pharmacy. Get a comprehensive overview of diabetes including a summary of the disease, its causes, symptoms and physical complications that can arise. Participants will also learn how to better manage diabetes through diet, exercise, blood sugar management and tips for interpreting food labels.
April 20, 11 a.m. – “Brain Health” Assistant Professor of Medicine and Geriatrics Dr. Karthik Joshua Kota, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Learn how exercising, dieting, and sleeping can positively affect one’s brain health and cognition. Find out how daily activities can boost brain health for long-term health and aging in place.
April 21, 11 a.m. – Mandala Art Craft with Parul. Decorate circular mandalas with markers, glass, or glitter stain to create a piece that symbolizes harmony. Large areas and raised outlines make it easy to create a breathtaking piece to hang in a window. **All supplies will be provided. For more information, call 908-753-9440.**
April 26, 11 a.m. – The Ten Exercises You Need to Stay Out of Pain by Nicholas Matthes, Trinity Health Care. Learn the top ten exercises to help participants stay out of pain.
