Somerset County-Operated Senior Centers Offer Exciting Activities in August

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Connect with others by registering for programs at any of the six Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers. Join the fun, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services oversees the senior wellness centers, which provide a wide range of programs to help foster lifelong enrichment in a social and uplifting atmosphere.

 

Lunch

Attendees can invite a friend or neighbor to join them for lunch. All county-operated senior centers provide a nutritionally balanced lunch on Monday through Friday for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 years and above. The menu includes a choice of hot meat-based or meatless entrées or cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunches. Senior center clients must make reservations for lunch by 10 a.m. on the previous business day.

 

Virtual and Hybrid Programs

Programs will be occurring in person and as hybrid and virtual. Participants can attend hybrid programs either in person with an instructor or via Zoom. Hybrid and virtual programs are noted throughout the schedule. Participants can join Zoom programs through a web browser without downloading any applications or software. A camera (audio and video) is required to participate in Zoom programs.

(NEW) Geri-Fit with Connie Ledder – Mondays & Wednesdays, 10 a.m. (Aug. 7 to Nov. 6. Rebuild strength for better functioning through Geri-Fit, a unique and beneficial exercise program, which incorporates strength training with stretching and range of motion exercises, stability and balance training for fall prevention, cardiovascular activity for heart health, and gait exercises to help improve walking. **This exercise program can be practiced while sitting or standing. Participants need a set of light dumbbell weights (2 lbs. to begin), a sturdy chair, a stretch band, and water to drink during the workout. Knitting/Crocheting/Stitching Club – Mondays, 12:30 – 4 p.m. Bring your knitting, crocheting or stitching project to the senior center and either practice your hobby or learn a new hobby while meeting wonderful people. **Everyone is welcome to join this club.**

Mahjong Club – Mondays & Wednesdays, 12:30 – 4 p.m. Learn to play Mahjong, an interesting game that helps keep your brain sharp and supercharged! This club is for anyone who loves the game and wants to meet new people and have fun. **This is not a competitive club. All levels of experience are welcome.**

 

Take Control of Exercise – Mondays, 1 p.mStrengthen core muscles and improve flexibility and balance while boosting stamina. Chair Yoga with JillianWednesdays & Fridays, 1 p.m. Gain health benefits by practicing yoga poses with the support and safety of your favorite chair. Increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect a lot of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. Aug. 1, 11 a.m. – “Gerard Rutgers Hardenbergh: NJ Artist and Ornithologist” by the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage. Take a virtual “Hardenbergh Hike” through history, art and nature,  and learn about New Jersey artist and ornithologist Gerard Rutgers Hardenbergh who was famous for his paintings of birdlife, landscape, fishing and still-life painting. He lived on a small houseboat in Scow Ditch, Bay Head, New Jersey for a time and painted local scenes including landscapes along the Jersey Shore and Barnegat Bay. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission.**

Aug. 2, 11 a.m. – “Proton Therapy: Pros & Cons” by Clinical Educator Jerry Rymer, ProCure Proton Therapy Center. Get an overview of proton therapy, an advanced form of radiation cancer treatment that destroys cancer cells but does not damage healthy tissue. Learn the pros and cons of Proton Therapy and the types of tumors this therapy can treat.

Aug. 3, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. – “The Farmers Market Program” by Kate Domen, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Learn about eligibility requirements for free farmers’ market electronic benefits worth $50 through a QR Code to purchase fresh vegetables, fruit, and herbs grown at local farms. Researchers have found that playing Bingo provides multiple health benefits, such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, and improving concentration, listening, and short-term memory skills.

Aug. 7, 11 a.m. – “Keeping a Healthy Mind” by Certified Dementia Practitioner Andi NobleLearn simple ways to keep the mind healthy, including meditation, exercise, and leisure activities. Maintaining the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of a healthy mind can positively affect how one thinks, feels, and acts.

Aug. 8, 11 a.m. – Music Through the Ages: 1950s-1980s by the Jersey Girls. Take a musical journey through the decades while dancing to hit songs from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

Aug. 14, 11 a.m. – “Tech Savvy Seniors: Using Your Tablet for Music and Magazines” by Cassandra Collucci, Somerset County Library System. Learn all the tips and tricks for using your tablet to listen to your favorite music and access your favorite magazines.

Aug. 15, 11 a.m. – Music Tribute to the 1950s and 1960s with Lorri Woodward. Wear your favorite summer outfits and sing along at a beach/summer-themed performance featuring songs such as “Margaritaville,” “Kokomo,” and “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay.”

Aug. 16, 11 a.m. – A Visit from the Somerset County Youth Council. Play classic Jeopardy with the Somerset County Youth Council.

Aug. 21, 11 a.m. – “Senior Medicare Patrol” by Charles Clarkson, Senior Medicare Patrol. Learn how to detect and report Medicare fraud and other scams.

Aug. 22, 11 a.m. – Game Day with Connie. Play Pokeno and the Left-Center-Right dice game, for fun and games. Connie will teach everyone how to play the games.

 

Aug. 23, 11 a.m. – “The Basics of Organ Donation” by Hospital and Community Services Coordinator Iveth Gonzalez, New Jersey Sharing Network. Learn the basics of organ donation. In the United States, 115,000 people are waiting for life-saving organ transplants and almost 4,000 of them are in New Jersey. A single organ donor can save the lives of eight people. **There will be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation.**

Aug. 24, 11 a.m. – Table Games with Basking Ridge Volunteer Connie Ledder. Join fellow center members for an hour playing Connect Four, Left-Center-Right Dice Game, and Pinochle. **No experience is necessary. Beginners are welcome.**

Aug. 28, 11 a.m. – “Heart Attacks and Strokes” by Mallory Dubuisson, Atlantic Health. Learn about the causes of heart attacks and strokes, one of the most common health crises in the United States. Participants will also find out prevention tips as well as how to identify symptoms.

Aug. 29, 11 a.m. – Craft: Ceramic Box Painting with Kelly. Learn how to paint boxes with a step-by-step tutorial. Qigong Practices with Michael – Mondays, 10 a.m. Learn the traditional practice of Qigong, a sitting meditation that teaches participants to get acquainted with their minds, bodies, and spirits. Beginners will learn to coordinate their breathing techniques with movements and then practice sets of exercises (like Tai Chi) until each movement and posture is perfected.

Learn movements to increase blood circulation, lubricate joints for flexibility, and strengthen and stabilize individual muscles. Gentle aerobics can help decrease the risk of falls and make it easier to accomplish day-to-day activities. **This class will be presented via Zoom and conducted live at the center by an instructor. Exercises can be practiced while standing or sitting. Enjoy this riveting performance by Carol Simon Levin when she portrays Lillian Feickert, president of the New Jersey Woman Suffrage Association and her fight for woman suffrage from 1912 to 1920. Aug. 8 & 22, 11 a.m. – Bereavement Support GroupShare common feelings about grief and the renewal process in this support group, which provides participants with a safe place for grieving the death of a loved one. Interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts are

Learn about working dogs and how man’s best friend has been earning his keep since domestication, as well as what occupations around the world still use dogs. Learn why it’s important to keep working your muscles, and how to do it best to avoid sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), which is a natural part of aging. After age 30, it’s common to lose 3 to 5% of muscle mass per decade. It’s never too late to rebuild muscle and maintain it.

Aug. 11, 11 a.m. – A Day at the Carnival with the Somerset County Youth Council. Join students from the Youth Council for fun and games.

Aug. 14, 11 a.m. – Remember That Song…Trivia. Join fellow senior center members for a fun trivia game that requires remembering the most popular songs from different decades.

Aug. 15, 11 a.m. – “Lovely Lentils” by Nutrition and Wellness Administrator Sheetal Bhatia, MPH, MS, RD, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Learn all about the little lentil, a nutritional powerhouse loaded with potassium, folate, iron, and fiber. This is a beneficial and versatile legume that will soon become your favorite food.

Aug. 16, 11 a.m. – Fun and Games with Lisa and Caitlin. Have a relaxing day playing oldie-but- goodie games, such as dominoes, Left-Center-Right, Pass the Pigs and more.

Aug. 18, 11 a.m. – Practicing Mindfulness with Anne Lorraine La, Parker Life. Learn about formal and informal mindfulness to reduce stress, anxiety and increase energy levels for a more productive life.

Aug. 21, 11 a.m. – Painting with Watercolors by Lisa and Caitlin. Express yourself through art and try different painting styles with guidance from Lisa and Caitlin. **All supplies will be provided.**

Learn about the technology used to overcome 1,674 feet of elevation. Discover how boats navigated along the Morris Canal, and what life was like for people who lived and worked along the canal. Participants will also learn about the locations at the canal that can be visited today.

Rummikub – Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, 9:30 a.m. Play this fast-moving board game, which requires players to have some luck and use strategic thinking. Playing Rummikub promotes social interaction, mental stimulation and relaxation. Time flies when you play this game.

In this presentation, participants will find out about the types of vision loss that can’t be corrected with glasses, contacts, medicine or surgery as well as learn about strategies and devices to help people with vision impairment to protect themselves from injury in the home. Elsa will bring examples of assistive devices that people with vision impairment can use in their homes.

Join fellow senior center members to discuss topics that will help participants navigate the unknown in life. Topics will range from lifestyle hints, consumer issues, pets, travel, food, home improvement, and health.  This is a pilot program that will occur monthly.

Aug. 17, 12:30 p.m. – “The Farmers Market Program” by Kate Domen, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Learn about eligibility requirements for free farmers’ market electronic benefits worth $50 through a QR Code to purchase fresh vegetables, fruit, and herbs grown at local farms. Participants will also find out about the process for application and registration, and which farm stands are participating in the program. **QR Codes are available at the Office on Aging & Disability Services, in Somerville, from July 5 to Sept. 30 on a first-come, first-serve basis.**

Aug. 18, 10:30 a.m. – “Signature Analysis” by Calligrapher, Graphologist Terry Antoniwicz, Anton Expert Handwriting. Learn about analyzing handwriting and how every downward stroke, upstroke, line flourish, and T crossed, and dotted has characteristics unique to everyone. Ms. Antoniwicz, who has helped law enforcement, financial institutes, and even Queen Elizabeth II, will also discuss how signatures can determine a person’s psychological characteristics and key personality traits unique to each individual. She will also analyze participants’ penmanship.

Aug. 21, 11 a.m. – Art 101: Part 2 by Quail Brook Senior, Illustrator, and Owner Barbara Yaney, Barbara Yaney Design, LLC. Learn about value and modeling in part two of this three-part series when participants will also find out how to use black and white color with charcoal and pencil.

(Hybrid) Aug. 21, 1 p.m. – “Elder Abuse: A Global Problem” by Lt. Joseph Jaruszewski, Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor, Trenton, New Jersey. Join this program and learn how to help prevent elder abuse, a worldwide crisis that stops seniors from aging with dignity, love, honor and safety. Elder abuse includes physical abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. **This is a hybrid class and will be presented live at the center by an instructor and simultaneously presented via Zoom.**

Aug. 22, 1 p.m. – “Senior Skin Aesthetics” by Respiratory Therapist, Certified Skin Aesthetician, Yoga Meditation Teacher Nancy A. Perez, B.Sc., RT, E-RYT.  Learn about good skincare through lifestyle changes and the right skincare routine that can be easily incorporated into daily life for men and women. Find out what can damage the skin including medications, illness and age and learn how to repair the damage.

Aug. 23, 11 a.m. – Karaoke 2023 Is Back with Quail Brook Participant Crystal Hapagame. So, you think you can’t sing? You might be right, but who cares? At least people are getting out of their chairs and moving. The audience will decide on the best singers and winners will receive prizes for first, second and third place.

Aug. 28, 11 a.m. – Art 101: Part 3 by Quail Brook Senior, Illustrator, and Owner Barbara Yaney, Barbara Yaney Design, LLC. Learn about overlapping shapes, and 1–2-point perspective and flattened perspective in this third session of a three-part series.

(Hybrid) Aug. 28, 12:45 p.m. – Literacy in New Jersey by Amy Lam, Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County. Learn how Literacy Volunteers provide free tutoring and literacy programs by providing opportunities and hope to adults who struggle with English literacy. **This is a hybrid class and will be presented live at the center by an instructor and simultaneously presented via Zoom.**

(Hybrid) Aug. 29, 1 p.m. – “New Jersey Attorney General’s Office” by Assistant Attorney General & Council Craig Sashihara, NJ CARES. Learn about the role of New Jersey’s Attorney General and find out about New Jersey’s legal and law enforcement matters and issues. Participants will also learn about the AG’s responsibilities with many divisions and commissions including criminal, civil, and regulatory, which is comprised of more than 2,500 uniformed officers, lawyers, and thousands of public servants. **This is a hybrid class and will be presented live at the center by an instructor and simultaneously presented via Zoom.**

 

Aug. 30, 10:45 a.m. – The Dog Days of Summer with DJ/Singer Winston Freeman. Enjoy the vibrant pulse of summer songs and have a doggone good time. Come dance to your favorite hot summer songs, such as “Under the Boardwalk,” “Hot Time in the City,” and more.

Bridge Group with Ronnie – Tuesdays & Fridays, 1 – 3 p.m. Play Bridge, a mentally challenging card game that provides intellectual and social interaction. Gentle Yoga with Jillian – Tuesdays, 1 p.m. Practice Hatha yoga poses, while either sitting or standing, to increase bone density and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Tai Chi with Roger – Fridays, 10 a.mReduce your risk of falling by practicing Tai Chi. In this class, participants will focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Studies have shown that some participants experience a reduction in pain, fatigue and stiffness and have gained a greater sense of well-being. **This program can be practiced while either standing or sitting.**

Aug. 2, 11 a.m. – “Financial Literacy & Housing Workshop” by Susie Suter, Central Jersey Housing Resource Center. Learn about reasonable accommodations and modifications for housing, co-signing and how it affects a consumer, closing accounts with minimal impact on your credit score, federal, state, and local senior housing, scams that specifically target older adults and tips and resources for homeowners and tenants.

Aug. 3 & 17, 11 a.m. – Basic Computer and iPad Instruction with Parul. Learn basic computer and iPad skills, such as checking email, opening documents and attachments, clearing the cache and creating Word documents. (Virtual) Aug. 10, 11 a.m. – “Paul Robeson: The American Hero” by the American Labor Museum. Learn about the life and accomplishments of Paul Robeson through photos and audio recordings. Robeson was an athlete, actor, singer, lawyer, and civil rights leader, but this presentation will concentrate specifically on Robeson’s early years within the context of the black experience in New Jersey, his time “on the banks,” and his early career in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission.**

Aug. 14-18, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  – Art Appreciation Exhibition. Enjoy artwork created by Warrenbrook’s Watercolor Group that will be on display every day for one week.

Aug. 30, 11 a.m. – “A Great Conveniency: Maritime History of the Hackensack and Passaic Rivers” by Environmental Historian Kevin Olsen, Montclair University. Learn about the maritime history of the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers, and how these rivers played an important role in the development of Northern New Jersey. Find out how during the late 1600s European exploration of the local waterways facilitated settlement and expanded the highway network into the Acquackanonck (Passaic), Bound Creek, New Bridge (New Milford), and Old Bridge (Oradell). In addition, towns such as Belleville, Hackensack, Little Ferry, and Paterson depended on river traffic for commerce and rivers played a role in the American Revolution when the Americans used whaleboats and other local craft to retaliate.
