Somerset County-Operated Senior Wellness Centers Offer Exciting Programs in July

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Connect with others by registering for programs at any of the six Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers. Join the fun, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services oversees the senior wellness centers, which provide a wide range of programs to help foster lifelong enrichment in a social and uplifting atmosphere.

Closing: There will be no in-person or hybrid classes/programs on Tuesday, July 4 Independence Day.

Lunch

Attendees can invite a friend or neighbor to join them for lunch. All county-operated senior centers provide a nutritionally balanced lunch on Monday through Friday for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 years and above. The menu includes a choice of hot meat-based or meatless entrées or cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunches. Senior center clients must make reservations for lunch by 10 a.m. on the previous business day.

Virtual and Hybrid Programs

Programs will be occurring in person and as hybrid and virtual. Participants can attend hybrid programs either in person with an instructor or via Zoom. Hybrid and virtual programs are noted throughout the schedule. A camera (audio and video) is required to participate in Zoom programs.

Zoom Tutorials

Participants can join Zoom programs through a web browser without downloading any applications or software. Learn how to use Zoom, or sign-up for a virtual tour at https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us.

Chair Yoga with JillianWednesdays & Fridays, 1 p.m. Gain health benefits by practicing yoga poses with the support and safety of your favorite chair. July 17, 11 a.m. – JAK Music School Concert.  Enjoy the sounds of popular songs performed by talented students and teachers from the JAK Music School. At the end of the performance, there will be a sing-along finale.

July 18, 11 a.m. – “Hoarding Awareness” by Ron Ford, Hoarders Express. Learn about hoarding, including, the diagnosis, how it can be prevented and how it can be a health hazard.

July 19, 11 a.m. – Cards for Hospitalized Kids: Community Service Project. Create memorable cards for children in the hospital with this creative way to cheer up children. The cards will be sent to Cards for Hospitalized Kids Foundation and distributed to hospitals all over the United States.

July 24, 11 a.m. – Summer Harp Melodies with Patricia Turse. Listen to the dulcet tones of the harp, a complicated and beautiful instrument, performed by Patricia Turse who has been a musician and music therapist for over 25 years.

July 25 & 31, 11 a.m. – Game Day with Connie. Play Pokeno and the Left-Center-Right dice game, for fun and games. Connie will teach everyone how to play the games.

July 26, 11 a.m. – “Concussion Prevention” by Debbie AidelmanBrain Injury Alliance of New Jersey. Learn about one of the most common types of brain injuries, concussions. Participants will find out about the different types of concussions and how to prevent the injuries.

July 27, 11 a.m. – Craft: Fruit Slice Coasters with Kelly. Create the perfect decoration for summer. Qigong Practices with Michael – Mondays, 10 a.m. Learn the traditional practice of Qigong, a sitting meditation that teaches participants to get acquainted with their minds, bodies, and spirits. Beginners will learn to coordinate their breathing techniques with movements and then practice sets of exercises (like Tai Chi) until each movement and posture is perfected.

This class will help participants improve their skills in multi-tasking, focusing and word- finding.

July 10, 11 a.m. – Meet a Seeing Eye Dog. Learn about seeing-eye dogs from Anita Eigen and her golden retriever, Macy. In this program, participants will find out how people who are blind can gain greater independence and dignity through the help of seeing-eye dogs.

July 11 & 25, 11 a.m. – Bereavement Support GroupShare common feelings about grief and the renewal process in this support group, which provides participants with a safe place for grieving the death of a loved one. Interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts are

July 18, 11:30 a.m.  – Hearing Screenings with Audiologist Dr. Sofya Schlafman, Hearinglife. Join Dr. Sofya Shlamman to get free hearing loss screening and answers to questions about hearing loss. **No appointment is necessary.**

July 20, 11 a.m. – Fall Prevention by Al Raccuia, JagOne Physical Therapy. Learn how to reduce the risk of falls, improve safety around the home, and learn exercises that can improve balance to reduce the risk of falls, one of the leading causes of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for people ages 65 and up. Although it is not possible to completely prevent falls, exercises and strength training can help reduce the risk.

 

July 21, 11 a.m. – “Emergency Preparedness” by Eldercare Educator Josh O’Neal, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Learn about emergency preparedness including why it is important to prepare for an emergency, how to prepare for an emergency, and what disasters are common to this area.

July 24, 11 a.m. – July Trivia with Lisa. Learn about famous birthdays and test your knowledge with word-picture puzzles.

 

July 25, 11 a.m. – “New Jersey Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” by Jeff Kampf, Lifelong Cognition. Get your tastebuds tingling in this fun lecture about the “diner capital of the world,” New Jersey and its all-star lineup of mouthwatering signature dishes. In this lecture, participants reminisce about some of the best iconic diners, drive-ins and dives and tasty dishes in New Jersey. **The program is sponsored by Bristol.**

July 26, 11 a.m. – “Active Shooter” Senior Center Training & Senior Frauds by Somerset County Sheriff Darrin Russo, and Officer Vincent Carrube. Learn information, guidance and tips for preparing for a potential active shooter. Participants will also learn how to detect and respond to fraudulent behavior that specifically targets seniors.

July 27, 11 a.m. – Mission to Mars by Paul Cirillo. Learn all about NASA’s Mars 2020 Rover, which will search for signs of past habitable conditions on Mars and microbial life as well as how it uses a drill to collect core samples and sets it aside on the surface of Mars for a future mission to potentially return it to Earth. Participants will also find out about technologies that will support human expeditions to Mars, produce oxygen, identify water resources, improve landing techniques, as well as detect weather, dust, and other potential environmental conditions that could affect astronauts living and working on Mars in the future.

July 28, 11 a.m. – The Amazing Sky Breath: Introduction by Sukumar Kavanoor, Art of Living Foundation. Practice SKY breathing and the skies the limit for the health benefits participants will achieve, including higher energy levels, stress reduction, mood improvement, a boost in the immune system, better sleep and greater mental clarity and focus. Simply Seated: Energize Serries with Curtis Adams – Fridays, 10 a.m. Join other center members for a fun, challenging and invigorating chair-exercise class in a video presentation. In this class, participants will practice a variety of exercises and stretching to strengthen the heart, abs, and core, help boost stamina and energy, and improve blood circulation, heart health, range of motion, motor skills and balance. **Participation requires a sturdy chair, water bottle, and hand weights for strength training. Participants can substitute hand weights with two soup cans or two filled water bottles.**

Blood Pressure Screenings – Last Friday of Every Month, 10 a.m. (July 28)  Get a free blood pressure and blood-sugar screening from the Philippine Nurse’s Association of New Jersey. **No appointment is necessary.**

 

Puzzle Club – Wednesdays & Fridays, 1 p.m. Strike up a conversation, make new friends, and enjoy assembling puzzles. Choose from a wide variety of puzzles at the senior center.

Nia MELT with Alida Westfield – Mondays, 11 a.m. Have an hour of fun every week while practicing this combination of healthy exercises Nia and MELT. Nia combines martial arts, modern dance, and yoga in a workout accompanied by music. Participants practice 15-20 minutes of non-impact Nia movements with music while standing or sitting, and then they will practice MELT, which is a self-treatment technique to help prevent pain, heal injury, and erase the negative effects of aging and active living. The class was created specifically for seniors.

 

(Hybrid) Yoga Chair Fusion with Debbi – Tuesdays, 10 a.m. Learn techniques to help gain flexibility and improve strength while immersing yourself in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. Boggle Bonanza & Wordle Word Club with Valerie Fryar – Tuesdays, 1 p.m. Picture this: seniors yelling out mono or multi-syllabic words. It’s Boggle, and it’s fun. This game isn’t just fun it provides multiple health benefits such as boosting memory and concentration and relieving stress. Play Boggle as a warmup to prepare for Wordle!

GERI-FIT Part 2 with Karen Jessie – Wednesdays & Fridays, 10 a.m. (May 3 – Aug. 4). Rebuild strength in this class, which is specifically for older adults. Geri-Fit uses strength training with stretching and range-of-motion exercises, stability and balance training for fall prevention, cardiovascular activity for heart health, and gait exercises to help improve walking. **This program is practiced while sitting and standing is optional. Participants will need a set of light dumbbell weights (2 lbs.), a sturdy chair, a stretch band and water to drink during the workout. This is a 45-minute class that is facilitated twice a week for 12 weeks for a total of 24 classes.**

Running with Rummikub – Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. Play this fast-moving board game that requires a little bit of luck and a little bit of strategy. Playing Rummikub fosters social interaction, mental stimulation, and relaxation. This game is so much fun! **All skill levels are welcome.**

July 14 & 21, 11 a.m. – Ping Pong: The Unofficial Name of an Olympic Sport with International Ping Pong Coach Chris LehmanGet your competitive juices flowing and learn how to properly play table tennis from an international Ping Pong coach. This fun game has been played by the British upper-class society since the 1800s and in 1988 it became a summer Olympic sport.

(Hybrid) July 17, 11 a.m. – “Open Wide: Your Dental Health” by the Art of Dentistry and Spa. Learn preventative oral healthcare including the correct way to use a toothbrush, electric toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash. July 17, 1 p.m. – “To Hear or Not to Hear &The Science of Hearing” by Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist and certified by the American Conference of Audioprasthology Dorothy J. Fry. Understand the different types of hearing loss (mild to profound), hearing-loss range (decibels) and the technology used to counter hearing loss. July 26, 11 a.m. – The Magic of Barbershop HarmonyEnjoy the Morris Music Men, an award-winning a cappella group with eight to ten singers who will perform a repertoire of America’s most popular music including pop, Broadway, country and rock. Immerse yourself in this toe-tapping performance.

July 27, 1 p.m. –Touch Mother Earth: A Cycle of Stimuli by Cheryl Glover. Learn how to use repurposed material including wood pieces, metal caps, wire, empty cylindrical cardboard objects, such as oatmeal boxes, toilet paper holders and decorations to create usable instruments that will be used by seniors for an impromptu drumming session. Afterward these unique and stylized handmade instruments will then be donated to a program for children with disabilities. **All supplies will be provided. For more information, call 732-563-4213. July 28, 10:45 a.m. – “Mothers of Invention” by Professional Storyteller and Historian Carol Simon Levin. Learn about women inventors whose achievements were often ignored, discounted, or credited to others. Participants will learn about inventors such as Lillian Moller Gilbreth known for her time-motion studies, Margaret Knight the inventor of flat-bottomed paper bags, film star Hedy Lamarr, whose research led to GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth technology, and Mary Kies, one of the first women to receive a U.S. patent for her method of weaving straw with silk to produce beautiful hats.

July 31, 11 a.m. – BingoPartake in a little bit of friendly competition and play Bingo, which is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo provides multiple benefits, such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, and improving concentration, listening, and short-term memory.

Tai Chi with Roger – Fridays, 10 a.mReduce your risk of falls by practicing Tai Chi. In this class, participants will focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Studies have shown that some participants experience a reduction in pain, fatigue and stiffness and have gained a greater sense of well-being. **This program can be practiced while either standing or sitting.**

Learn all about laughter-wellness because “laughter is the best medicine.” In this class, participants will learn techniques for laughing including awareness-breathing and using fake laughter to reduce stress, encourage a positive outlook and feel more refreshed and energized.

July 7, 11 a.m. – Maintaining Your Balance and Stability as You Age by Nicholas Matthes, Trinity Rehabilitation. Learn the benefits of improving your balance as you age and how it is crucial to maintaining your independence, overall health, and well-being. July 10, 17, 24 & 31, 11 a.m. – Pranayama by Kruti Thakore, Board-Certified Health Coach, National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching.  Learn several pranayama (breathing) techniques to help restore balance and heal the mind and body. Pranayama breathing techniques are part of the ancient Indian yogic tradition, and it is said that this came into existence around 5000 BC.
