Somerset County Park Commission Opens Registration for Spring – Summer Programs Beginning March 16
Spring Into Action and Hike, Walk, Go Birding, and More
SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission is opening online registration for the Environmental Education Center’s April, May, and June programs beginning March 16, at 9 a.m. Seasonal programs include hiking, animal watching, walking, paddling, birding, and more.
Outdoor activities can help improve one’s overall mental and physical health, such as burning calories and increasing vitamin D levels. Experts suggest that getting just ten or fifteen minutes of daylight a few days a week has many benefits and may help to protect against osteoporosis, cancer, depression, heart attack, and stroke.
The following programs occur in April and May:
Animal Tracks – Saturday, April 9, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Ages 6-years and over. Activity Number: 51805-05. Hike trails with an expert Naturalist who will explain how to search for signs of animals that live in the park. Dress appropriately for the weather. Boots are strongly recommended. An adult should accompany children. Fees are $6 per student/senior and $7 per adult.
Explore Natirar Park! – Wednesday, April 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. Adults only. Activity Number: 51590-05. Go for a hike and enjoy large shade trees and rolling green hills, check out critters in the river and enjoy a picnic dinner. Bring water, binoculars and pack a picnic dinner. Participants will meet at Natirar Park (in the parking lot near the grey barn), located at 2 Main Street, Peapack, NJ. Fees are $12 per senior/student and $14 per adult.
Frog Blob – Saturday, April 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Ages 7 to 9-years. Activity Number: 51430-14. Visit the Great Swamp with an expert Naturalist and search for frog-blobs, tadpoles, and those wonderful hip-hopping creatures known as frogs. Dress according to the weather. The fee is $9 per person.
Turtle Power – NEW – Tuesday, April 26, from 4 to 5 p.m. All ages. Activity Number: 51642-01. Learn about the amazing characteristics of turtles with an expert Naturalist. Look for turtles on the trails and also see interesting relics of turtles. Fees are $6 per student/senior and $7 per adult.
Spring Hike with Mom – NEW – Sunday, May 8, from 2 to 3 p.m. All ages. Activity Number: 51943-01. Enjoy the sights of spring, identify flowers blooming and animals singing with an expert Naturalist while strolling through the park on Mother’s Day. Fees are $6 per student/senior and $7 per adult.
