Somerset County Seeks Volunteers for Handyman Program

Volunteers Can Help the Elderly and Disabled

SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services is seeking volunteers for its Handyman Program, which offers help with minor household repairs to older adults and persons with disabilities. Volunteers are especially needed in the Somerset/Franklin Township area.

“Our goal is to help residents live safely and independently in their own homes,” said Somerset County Commissioner Paul M. Drake, Volunteer Services liaison. “Small improvements such as installing a grab bar, changing a battery in a smoke detector, or even just changing a light bulb can make a huge difference in the life of someone unable to do it on their own.”

Other typical jobs may include minor electric or plumbing repairs, changing locks, putting in and taking out window air conditioners, and building and installing wheelchair ramps. Volunteer Services welcomes retired contractors and tradesmen, and others who enjoy working on repairs and helping residents in Somerset County. There is no charge to the recipients for the services provided by the Handyman Program. The only cost to the resident is the cost of any materials needed.

Participants of the Handyman Program attend monthly meetings where work requests are discussed and assigned. Volunteers can select jobs that match their skillsets and identify when they are available to provide the service. Those who are unsure about their skill levels will receive hands-on training by fellow volunteers.

For more information and to sign up as a volunteer, call Bill Crosby at the Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services at 908-704-6358 or email crosby@co.somerset.nj.us
