Somerset County Senior Centers Offer Virtual and In-Person Programs Throughout August

 

SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers are continuing to offer both in-person and virtual programs while following state-mandated public healthcare guidelines. Attendees must register in advance and provide proof of vaccination or exemption that has been approved by the county. Attendees must also wear face masks and maintain social distance.

Congregate Dining at the Senior Wellness Centers

Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers offer a nutritionally balanced lunch for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout August. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée or a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Reservations must be made before 10 a.m. on the previous business day.

Grab and Go Lunch Service

Grab and Go Lunch is available as a healthy alternative to congregate dining. Seniors can pick up their lunch curbside at any of the six county-operated senior centers on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration and reservations are required

Zoom Guidelines

Unless otherwise specified, residents aged 60 and above can join any Zoom programs listed in this schedule even if they are not a client at the host center. Zoom is a secure, video-based, user-friendly, online platform that can be accessed through a smartphone, tablet, or computer that allows residents to see and hear others. Participants can join Zoom meetings through a web browser without downloading any applications or software.

Participants are required to obtain and complete an Activity Release Form from the senior center they regularly attend. After submitting the form to that center, participants will receive an email with information about all Zoom classes and programs listed in this schedule. All programs are FREE for registered members!

Aug. 4, 11 a.m.  – “Princeton and the American Revolution” by Barry Singer, Historical Society of Princeton. Learn about Princeton’s fascinating role in the American Revolutionary War that led to the creation of our free nation. Find out about “10 Crucial Days,” which became the Battle of Princeton on Jan. 3, 1777. Images will illustrate the effects of the war on Princeton, and Barry will read some words from soldiers. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission. Aug. 9, 10:30 a.m. – “Birds of a Feather: The Art of Birding in Your Backyard” by an Educator from Duke Farms. Sneak a peek at our fine, feathered friends, and learn the anatomical differences, unique sounds and habits of birds. Find out how to spot a black-eyed junco, mourning dove or tufted titmouse. **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

 

Aug. 9, 11 a.m. – “Tour of Princeton Cemetery by Historian Eve Mandel,” Historical Society of Princeton. Hear extraordinary stories about prominent members of the Princeton community including a U.S. president, vice president and other significant figures in American History.  Princeton, also once known as “Westminster Abbey of the United States” has a definite place in history.” **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission. Aug. 9, 1:30 p.m. – Monthly Book Club (Every Second Tuesday). Join us to discuss “The Summer Wives” by Beatriz Williams and select the next book to read. New members are always welcome! **This club is only for Warrenbrook Senior Center Participants.**

 

Aug. 11, 11 a.m. – “Lighting and Scenery (Part 2)” by Marisa Merrigan Robertazzi. Enjoy this four-part series about theater and the art of acting. Presented by a professional actor, scenic designer, and stage manager from the New York/New Jersey metro area for over 25 years, Marissa will discuss elements of both plays and musicals including the history of acting, what makes acting “magical,” the visual aspects of theater, and how color, texture and shape help create the environment for the actor and the audience. **This program was made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Aug. 18, 11 a.m. – Create a Summer Themed Watercolor Painting with Sam Matthews, Art Across Borders. Paint a summer-themed watercolor painting with your supplies in a step-by-step tutorial. **Participants need the following supplies: watercolor paints, paintbrush, watercolor paper, pencil, a cup for water, and paper towels, or colored pencils, crayons or any other medium that will help you create a summer-themed picture. This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Aug. 29, 1 p.m. – Finish the Song Title with Denise. After the beginning of a well-known song title is read participants will complete the title. After everyone has responded, Denise will provide a fact or two about each song. **This program is hosted by the Montgomery Senior Center.**

 

Aug. 30, 10:30 a.m. – “Resilience” by Samantha Malinger, M.S.W. Samantha will discuss what resilience means during challenging times and how you can remain resilient no matter what life throws at you. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Basking Ridge.**

Mondays, 10 a.m.  – Chair Yoga with Manjula. Gain health benefits from practicing yoga poses with the support and safety of your favorite chair. Increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while immersed in a relaxing class. Expect a lot of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and helping to gain an overall sense of well-being. **The class is open to all skill levels and can be practiced while standing or sitting. Tuesdays, 11 a.m. – Gentle Aerobics with Lisa & Caitlin. Exercise and move without putting undue pressure or strain on your body. Learn movements to increase blood circulation, lubricate joints for flexibility, and strengthen and stabilize individual muscles. Gentle aerobics can help decrease the risk of falls and make it easier to accomplish day-to-day activities. **Exercises can be practiced while standing or sitting. This class is manageable for people ages 60 years and above, beginners, or others who need modification to their exercise routine. Participants will build cardiovascular health by challenging the heart and working the hip, leg, and arm muscles when practicing fun, rhythmic moves while sitting in a chair. **A maximum of 25 participants is allowed in the class. Tai Chi for Health – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. (July 13 – Oct. 19). In this program, participants will focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Studies have shown that some participants experience a reduction in pain, fatigue and stiffness, and have gained a greater sense of well-being. Knitting/Crocheting/Stitching Club – Mondays, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Bring your knitting/crocheting/stitching project or come learn a new hobby and meet wonderful friends. All are welcome to join.

Aug. 3, 11 a.m. – “Avoiding Senior Scams” by Sheriff Darrin Russo, Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. Have you ever received an email or phone call asking for money or information? Have you ever been unsure if you can trust the person contacting you? There are countless scammers out there, but Somerset County Sheriff Darrin Russo will teach you how to protect yourself from costly scams directed at older adults and will share general safety tips.

Aug. 4, 11, 18 & 25, 11 a.m. – Line Dancing with David CrossLine dancing is so much fun, it doesn’t seem like exercise! You don’t need a partner and it’s an easy way to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. Aug. 5 & 19, 10 a.m. – BingoBingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, improving concentration, honing listening skills and boosting short-term memory.

Aug. 5, 11 a.m. – Lucille Ball Trivia with Lisa. Lucille Ball would be celebrating her 111th birthday on Aug. 6, so we will celebrate Lucille’s birthday with some fascinating facts.

Aug. 10, 11 a.m. – Sunglasses Drawing with Karen Haake. When using printed wallpaper as a background, pencil images drawn on top of this paper will be enhanced and shared with different underlining textures, colors and shapes. Aug. 12, 11 a.m. – “The Beauty of the Harp” by Harpist Merynda Adams. Did you know that the harp is believed to have existed since 15,000 BC, and it is one of the oldest instruments in the world? The word “harp” originates from the German, Old Norse and Angelo Saxon words meaning “to pluck.” Join us for music and commentary.

Aug. 17, 11 a.m. – Craft: Rain Sticks with Lisa. Create rain sticks in preparation for our Drum Circle on Aug. 19. These fun instruments will bring nature to our music. **Please bring cardboard tubes (from paper towel rolls), if possible.**

Aug. 19, 11 a.m. – Drumming for Health and Wellness with Dave Miller, EarthMovers Drum Collective. Learn how to hold a drum and make different tones while soothing the mind, body, and spirit. This drumming circle provides a holistic experience and is an ancient approach to promoting healing, inciting self-expression, and helping to build communication skills. Aug. 24, 11 a.m. – “All About Composting” by Tom Reeder, Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Did you know that you can remove 90% of the waste stream that overflows into landfills by recycling and composting? Tom will teach us how to do our part for the environment. We will learn how to perfect your home composting skills by mixing the right proportions of the “browns and greens.”

Aug. 26, 11 a.m. – “What You Should Know About Organ Donation” by Hospital and Community Services Coordinator Ametra Burton, New Jersey Sharing Network. In the United States, 115,000 people are waiting for life-saving organ transplants and almost 4,000 of them are in New Jersey. A single organ donor can save the lives of eight people. Ametra will be joining us to discuss the basics of organ donation and also answer questions from participants.

Aug. 31, 11 a.m. – “Birds of the World by Ben Barkley,” Somerset County Parks Commission. Did you know that there are different types of poisonous birds? Did you know that birds can fly while they are asleep, or that one species migrates 50,000 miles every year? There are over 10,000 species of birds worldwide and each one is more interesting than the next. This one-hour lecture by Ben Barkley will highlight the wackiest, funniest, and most bizarre species of birds from around the globe.

Scrabble Club – Mondays, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Exercise your vocabulary and crossword skills by enjoying a friendly game of Scrabble. If there is enough interest the senior centers may host a Scrabble competition.

 

Qigong Practice with Michael – Mondays, 1 p.m. Learn the traditional practice of Qigong, a sitting meditation that helps participants coordinate their mind, body and spirit (similar to tai chi). When practicing sets of exercises, beginners will learn to practice breathing techniques that are combined with physical movements until each movement and posture are perfected.

 

Bridge Club – Mondays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Play Bridge, a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Aug. 1, 11 a.m. – “Senior Medicare Patrol by Joel Schneider.” New Jersey’s Senior Medicare Patrol helps protect Medicare and Medicaid programs and also protects you from fraud. Join Joel to learn about how to detect and report Medicare fraud, and other scams you should know about.

Aug. 3, 11 a.m. – Brain Games with Lisa and Caitlin. Did you know that solving puzzles or challenging yourself with new mind-stretching activities can stimulate the brain and enhance your creative and critical thinking processes? Join Lisa and Caitlin for some mind-tingling, brain-stumping word games.

Aug. 8, 11 a.m. – “Low Back Pain” by Connor Stevenson, JAG One Physical Therapy. Thirty-one million Americans suffer from low back pain, are you one of them? Connor will discuss the causes of lower back pain, and what you can do to help prevent and alleviate it.

Aug. 8 & 22, 11 a.m. – Bereavement Support GroupShare common feelings about grief and the renewal process in this support group that provides participants with a safe place for grieving the death of a loved one. Interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts are incorporated into this group. Doctor of Ministry, Grief Counselor, and Pastoral Psychotherapist Ronald W. Aug. 10, 11 a.m. – “Famous Folks from the Bronx” by Joanna Picciano and Paul White, Sunrise Senior Living. What do Lauren Bacall, J-Lo, and Rob Reiner have in common? They all come from the same 42-square-mile patch of New York City called the Bronx. Paul and Joanna will discuss the many famous people that resided in the same borough.

Aug.  11, 11 a.m. – Senior Fraud Prevention by Melanie Hazim, Department of Consumer Affairs. Learn how to protect yourself and spot a scam.

Aug. 18, 11 a.m. – “Joint Protection, Fall Prevention and Posture” by Katie Hutzayluk, Kessler Rehabilitation Center. One small fall can disrupt your entire life. Katie will teach us how to stand up tall and preserve our joints, to help prevent costly and dangerous falls.

Aug. 19, 11 a.m. – Fact or Fiction with Cate. As Sherlock Holmes once said, “Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent.” Can you guess if this wild statement is true or false? The answers may surprise you. Test your memory and your imagination and learn something new or shocking!

 

Aug. 22, 11 a.m. – “Election Information” by Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter. With mid-term elections coming, you may have questions about the voting process. County Clerk Steve Peter will join us to discuss how your vote is kept safe and confidential, and what information you should know before going to the polls, or mailing in your vote, this year.

Aug. 24, 11 a.m. – “Off the Coast” by Naturalist Vanessa Darras, Somerset County Parks Commission. The sea turtle is an amazing animal that can migrate for thousands of miles and positively impact our environment. During this presentation by Vanessa, you will learn about how sea turtles are adapting to the environment and why they need your help.

Rick will explain how captioned telephones benefit those who have difficulty hearing on the telephone. Like captioned television, CaptionCall uses advanced technology and a communications assistant to quickly provide written captions of a caller’s conversation and display it on a large, easy-to-read screen. CaptionCall is only made available to individuals who have a medically recognized hearing disability. The CaptionCall service is supported through the funds from the federal government’s Interstate Telecommunications Relay Service to help provide functionally-equivalent communications to people with hearing loss.

Aug. 8, 11 a.m. – Drumming for Health and Wellness with Dave Miller, EarthMovers Drum Collective. Learn how to hold a drum and make different tones while soothing the mind, body, and spirit. This drumming circle provides a holistic experience and is an ancient approach to promoting healing, inciting self-expression, and helping to build communication skills. Aug. 25, 10:30 a.m. – “Norz-Hill Farm and Market: Cultivating More Than Just Food by Debbie Norz.” From 1920 to today, Norz-Hill Farm and Market continues to farm on its original 1200 acres of land in Hillsborough through loving and endless hours of labor. Norz-Hill Farm and Market produces soybeans, corn, tomatoes, rye, alfalfa, pumpkins, and other vegetables and is a member of the New Jersey Farmland Preservation Program. Improve your balance, flexibility, range of motion, strength, energy, and pain levels by practicing Tai Chi Chair, which is perfect for participants who have balance issues. Aug. 31, 10:30 a.m. – “Emergency Management: Managing an Emergency” by the Somerset County Office of Emergency Management. Do you know what to do in case of a fire, if you or someone you know gets hurt, stops breathing, or is in a situation that requires the police and EMTs? Don’t panic! This educational and hands-on program will help you understand and engage in First Aid and CPR, know when to call 9-1-1 and what happens during the call. **This is a hybrid class, which will be conducted live at the center by an instructor and simultaneously offered on Zoom.**

Take Control with Exercise. Mondays, 10 a.m. This ongoing exercise program is appropriate for all skill levels and can be practiced while either standing or sitting. Zumba Gold with Judith – Tuesdays, 10 a.m. Get your blood pumping with some zesty music that will truly inspire a hearty workout. Build cardiovascular health by challenging your heart and working, hip, leg, and arm muscles when performing fun and rhythmic moves while sitting in a chair. **This class is suitable for beginners or anyone who needs modifications to their exercise routine. Bridge Group with Ronnie – Tuesdays, 1 to 3 p.m. Play Bridge, a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social interaction. Playing bridge regularly stimulates the brain to keep it alert, and helps the memory stay active. New members and beginners are always welcome. **Lessons are available. Project Healthy Bones – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. Improve balance, strength, flexibility, and posture in this peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program for individuals who are either at risk for osteoporosis or have it. **The class is currently full at this time.**

 

Gentle Yoga with Jillian – Thursdays, 10 a.m. Practice Hatha yoga poses while either sitting or standing to increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. The class is perfect for relieving stress and helping to gain an overall sense of well-being. **The class is appropriate for all levels of skill. The cost is $40 for the eight-week program. Tai Chi with Roger – Fridays, 10 a.m. Help reduce the risk of falls, ease pain, fatigue, and stiffness and gain a greater sense of well-being when practicing Tai Chi. In this class, participants will focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into

Aug. 1, 11 a.m. – “A W.A.S.P. Takes Wing” by Historian Carol Simon Levin. Carol will tell the story of the Women Airforce Service Pilots through the eyes of Ann Baumgartner Carl, the Jersey girl who trained as a WASP. She became the only American woman to test-fly experimental planes during the war, and the first American woman to fly a jet airplane. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission.**

Aug. 2, 1 p.m. – Needlework Group. Are you looking for other needle workers (quilting/stitching/yarn work) that would like to get together once a month to socialize and discuss individual needlework projects in a group setting? If yes, this is the perfect group for you. Aug. 3, 17 & 31, 11a.m. – Bingo with Rashmi. Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, and improving concentration, listening, and short-term memory.

 

Aug. 4, 11 a.m. – “Medicare Fraud” by Joel Schneider, Senior Medicare Patrol. Joel will teach us how to protect ourselves from Medicare fraud, waste, and abuse.

Aug. 5, 11 a.m. – Craft: Creating a Weaving Bowl with Parul. Today we will weave a four-inch round plastic bowl with jute yarn. This is a great hand-eye coordination activity that encourages originality. **All supplies will be provided. Call 908-753-9440 to register.**

Aug. 8, 11 a.m. – Hawaiian Luau Party. President Eisenhower proclaimed Hawaii the 50th state on Aug. 21, 1959. Learn the history of this island state, myths and legends, and enjoy the natural beauty in a way that protects the state’s delicate ecosystem with a drone video tour of the island. Dress up in your Hawaiian outfits and be ready to play some traditional Hawaiian games like “Pass the Coconut,” “Ulu Maika,” Hawaiian Limbo,” and “Kuma Hula Says” with Hawaiian music playing in the background.

Aug. 8 & 22, 1 p.m. – Canasta Card Game. Canasta is a game from the Rummy family. It combines luck of the draw with skill and diverse strategies. It is a challenging game and a great social experience. The game is typically played with four people with two standard decks of cards. Players will attempt to make melds of seven cards of the same rank and “go out” by playing all cards in their hands.

Aug. 10, 11 a.m. – “Healthy Aging” by Alicia O’Connor, the Cognitive and Research Center of New Jersey. Alicia will discuss the clinical trials available that aim to provide diagnostic treatment and supportive resources for people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive disorders.

Aug. 11, 11 a.m. – “Armchair Travel: Italy.” Italy is a boot-shaped country famous for its food, fashion, music, antiques, artifacts, amazing landscapes, volcanos, opera and more. We will travel to three destinations including Rome, Milan, and Lake Como. Be ready to complete a mind-stimulating quiz about Italy and taste cannoli dip.

Aug. 12 & 26, 11 a.m. – Brain Games & Hand Bells with Adrienne GraubardJoin fellow center members for some mind-tingling, brain-stumping word games and a fun-filled musical workout using handbells. Studies show that playing music and games can stimulate the brain and enhance creative and critical thinking processes.

Aug. 15, 11 a.m. – India Independence Day Celebration. Independence Day is a national holiday celebrated annually in India on Aug. 15, which marks the end of British rule in 1947 and the establishment of a free and independent Indian nation. Join us as we celebrate India Independence Day. Learn about India’s history, and cultural songs, and hear about life in India from other center members.

Aug. 18, 11 a.m. – Riddles. The best riddles are enigmas wrapped up in a puzzle and shrouded in mystery. Join us as we try to come up with the solutions to some “Rhyming Riddles,” “Brain Teasers,” and “What am I” riddles. These riddles will challenge the mind and require the ability to look beyond words.

Aug. 19, 11 a.m. – Craft: Painting Cement Molded Butterflies with Brigette Colabella. Bridgette will provide us with a Cement Molded Butterfly and teach us how to paint it with a special technique. Aug. 22, 11 a.m. – Blood Pressure Screenings. A nurse from the Visiting Nurse Association will be on-site to do individual blood pressure screenings and answer questions. No appointment is necessary.

Aug. 24, 11 a.m. – Musical Performance with Paul Elwood. Sing along with Paul and revisit your favorite songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Make sure to wear your dancing shoes!

Aug. 25, 11 a.m. – Jingo. Jingo has all the fun of Bingo but also learning interesting and important facts on a wide variety of topics. Come have fun and win prizes.

Aug. 29, 11 a.m. – “Cooking with Herbs & Spices with Pesto and Crackers Tasting” by Jennifer Korneski, Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Cooking with herbs and spices will enhance the flavor of your meals and improve your health. Learn about how to use these natural flavors and incorporate these herbs into your everyday meals.
