Somerset County Senior Wellness Centers Offer Virtual and In-Person Programs Throughout September
SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers continue to offer in-person and virtual programs throughout September. In-person programs are available four days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Congregate Dining at the Senior Wellness Centers
Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers offer nutritionally balanced lunches for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout September. The menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée or a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Please make reservations before 10 a.m. on the previous business day.
Grab and Go Lunch Service
Grab and Go Lunch service is available as a healthy alternative to congregate dining. Seniors can pick up their lunch at curbside at any of the six county-operated senior centers on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration and reservations are required.
Zoom Guidelines
Unless otherwise specified, residents aged 60 and above can join any Zoom programs listed in this schedule even if they are not a client at the host center. Zoom is a secure, video-based, user-friendly, online platform that can be accessed through a smartphone, tablet, or computer that allows residents to see and hear others. Participants can join Zoom meetings through a web browser without downloading any applications or software.

Participants are required to obtain and complete an Activity Release Form from the senior center they regularly attend. After submitting the form to that center, participants will receive an email with information about all Zoom classes and programs listed in this schedule. All programs are FREE for registered members!

Sept. 9, 11 a.m. – “Seven Things to Organize this Fall” by Bestselling Author & Expert Organizer Jamie Novak. Learn how to stop procrastinating and the seven areas not to overlook when decluttering. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

Sept. 13, 1:30 p.m. – Monthly Book Club (Every Second Tuesday). Discuss the historical fiction novel, “A Gentleman from Moscow” by Amor Towles then select the next book to read. New members are always welcome! **This program is only for Warrenbrook Senior Center Participants.**
Sept. 15, 11 a.m. – “The 1913 Paterson Silk Strike by the American Labor Museum.” In this interesting presentation, participants will explore the historic labor action which led to workplace reforms that are still prevalent today. In the winter of 1913, thousands of men, women, and children marched out of the silk mills in Patterson, New Jersey demanding decent working conditions, an end to child labor, and shorter workdays. Upton Sinclair and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn are among just a few of the advocates for fair labor laws. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission. Sept. 29, 11 a.m. – Music and Direction (Part 3) by Marisa Merrigan Robertazzi. Join this interactive program led by a professional actor, who has been a scenic designer, and stage manager for over 25 years in the New York/New Jersey metro area. In this four-part series, participants will learn about plays and musicals, how to interpret a script, the art of stage direction and the use of music and musical scores for storytelling. **This program is made possible by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Tai Chi for Health – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. (July 13 – Oct. 19). Focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Studies have shown that participants notice a reduction in pain, fatigue, and stiffness, and have gained a greater sense of well-being. Sept. 7, 11 a.m. – “Proton Therapy” by Clinical Educator Jerry Rymer, ProCure Proton Therapy Center. Learn the science and clinical benefits of proton therapy, which is an advanced radiation therapy that can help treat prostate, breast, and lung cancers.
Sept. 8, 10 a.m. – Trivia of the Month: Pirates with Kelly. Test your knowledge and continue learning new things during this trivia session about pirates.
Sept. 9, 11 a.m. – “Photography: The Pacific Northwest and Camping with Bears in Alaska” by Photographer David Ward. See beautiful photos of mountains, waterfalls, flowers, majestic bears, bald eagles and the scenery of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

Sept. 21, 11 a.m. – “New Jersey Piecework” by Historical Interpreter and Researcher Dana Bala. Learn the history of quilts, fabrics, samplers, sewing rooms, sewing machines, and the workmanship that was required to create pieces during the early 1800s-1940s as related to the Works Progress Administration, an ambitious employment program created by President Roosevelt. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission.**

Qigong Practice with Michael – Mondays, 10 a.m. Learn the traditional practice of Qigong, a sitting meditation that helps participants coordinate their mind, body and spirit (like tai chi). When practicing sets of exercises, beginners will learn to practice breathing techniques that are combined with physical movements until each movement and posture are perfected.

Find out why our relationship with plants is important and how it has evolved over thousands of years. Learn about the importance of agriculture, how cotton became a global empire, the use of plants for medicine, and the creation of biofuels.
Sept. 8, 11 a.m. – “Courage for Your Mind” by Alexis Mosby, Catholic Charities, Hope & Healing. Learn how to achieve good mental health and examine the strategies for positive thinking. Participants will also learn how mental health can impact one’s social, psychological, and emotional well-being.
Sept. 12 & 19, 11 a.m. – Bereavement Support Group. Share common feelings about grief and the renewal process in this support group that provides participants with a safe place for grieving the death of a loved one. Interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts are incorporated into this group. Doctor of Ministry, Grief Counselor, and Pastoral Psychotherapist Ronald W. Sept. 14, 11 a.m. – “Avoiding Senior Scams” by Sheriff Darrin Russo, Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. Have you ever received an email or phone call asking for money or information? Have you ever been unsure if you can trust the person contacting you? There are countless scammers out there, but Somerset County Sheriff Darrin Russo will teach you how to protect yourself from costly scams directed at older adults and will provide general safety tips.

Sept. 15, 22 & 29, 12:30 p.m. – Ukulele Bootcamp. Learn the ukulele quickly and start playing songs on the first day with this easy-to-pick-up instrument, which has a wonderful way of making complicated music sound simple. Playing the ukulele can improve focus, and hand-eye coordination, foster mental clarity and support social interaction. **No previous experience or musical training is necessary. Learn about Henna, which condition and nourishes the hair by forming a protective layer, leaving tresses shiny and voluminous. At the end of the presentation, participants will get to create a beautiful henna design on their hands.

Sept. 23, 11 a.m. – Your Favorite Hits with Chris Doughty. Sing along to the Beatles; the Rolling Stones; and Peter, Paul, and Mary, while Chris plays your favorite songs using multiple instruments.
Sept. 26, 11 a.m. – Bop with the Beas. Celebrate the songs that still make you dance. All your favorite hits of the 50s and 60s will be revived in this wonderful performance.
Sept. 28, 11 a.m. – “Maintain the Brain by Mallory Dubuisson,” Visiting Nurse Association. Learn how to keep your brain active and healthy to help prevent Alzheimer’s this September during World Alzheimer’s Month. This presentation will help you learn how to safeguard yourself against the disease so that you are not one of the 35 million people living with Alzheimer’s.

Sept. 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 11 a.m. – “Healthy Aging” Community in Crisis Senior Education Director Brenda Miller. Take this informative and interactive seven-week wellness program for adults 60 years of age or older to receive valuable information about health and wellness, medication use, stress management, depression and substance use and misuse. **The seventh session will provide information about pain management with yoga, chiropractic care, massage and more. Participants must attend all (or most) sessions.**

Sept. 21, 11 a.m. – “Fall Prevention” by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. In this interactive presentation, participants will learn about the associated risks of falls in the senior population, which can cause great physical and financial damage. Participants will learn how to create and implement a fall-prevention program, receive informative handouts, and learn exercises to promote strength, endurance, balance and flexibility.
Set. 22, 11 a.m. – Autumn. Celebrate autumn and help create a Tree of Thanks. Put a personal thank you message on a leaf and hang it on the tree at the Warrenbrook Senior Center for everyone to admire.
Sept. 23, 11 a.m. – A Visit to the Senior Wellness Center at Basking Ridge. Let’s visit the Senior Wellness Center at Basking Ridge to play Bingo, which is more than just an exciting activity; researchers have found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, improving concentration, sharpening listening skills, and bolstering short-term memory.
Sept. 29, 11 a.m. – Oktoberfest. Celebrate German Heritage Month by completing an Oktoberfest Crossword Puzzle, Jumble, Match, Quilt, and Word Searches.
