Somerset County Youth Services to Host ‘Media Literacy as a Violence-Prevention Tool’
Virtual Conference on May 27, Professional Credits Available
SOMERVILLE, NJ – Parents, guardians and professionals who work with children and families are invited to a free Zoom presentation, titled “Media Literacy as a Violence Prevention Tool,” which will be held on May 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. The workshop will be hosted by the Somerset County Youth Services and presented by Safe + Sound Somerset’s Outreach Prevention Team. Participants will learn how to promote media literacy to young people to help prevent violence. One professional credit is available. Pre-registration is required. The Outreach Prevention Team will review why media literacy is an essential skill for young people and how it can influence and distort opinions, ideas, and attitudes about violence, sex and relationships.
“Media Literacy as a Violence-Prevention Tool” will provide participants with the necessary tools and language to teach young people how to critically access, analyze, and evaluate media while they are either consuming it or creating media.
Safe+Sound Somerset has been providing services to survivors of sexual and domestic abuse for more than 40 years. The services they offer include access to resources, support, safe housing, counseling, legal advocacy, education about healthy relationships, and trauma intervention services. All services are confidential and provided at no cost to individuals, families, and the community.
